むかしむかし、
ウィッシュ地方リピの村には
“霧の洞窟”と呼ばれる場所があったという。
願いを抱く者だけが辿り着ける、
深い霧の奥。
そのさらに奥底、
月明かりさえ滅多に差し込まぬ場所に、
一枚の鏡がひっそりと置かれていた。
名を――
月影の鏡。
それは夜の静寂にのみ姿をあらわし、
映すのは顔かたちではなく、
その者の“こころの奥底”。
手放してしまった夢。
言葉にできなかった想い。
いつの間にか忘れてしまった祈り。
淡く揺れる月光にのせて、
鏡はそれらを静かに映し返すという。
ある晩、
村の老いた語り部はこう言った。
「願いとはな、空へ投げるものではない。
願うとは、自らの手で掴み取るための“約束”なのじゃ。
この鏡が映すのは、願いを叶える者。
それはきっと――
おまえ自身なのだよ。」
それ以来、
誓いの儀式の夜には、
人々は静かに洞窟へと向かう。
三つの炎に灯をともし、
十字の指環を捧げ、
胸に宿した願いと向き合う。
そして、ただひとつの問いを
自らへと投げかける。
「わたしは、ほんとうに何を願っているのか？」
霧の奥。
誰にも気づかれぬまま、
月影の鏡はそっと揺れる。
答えは、外にはない。
鏡の中に映る
“そのまなざし”こそが、
すべてのはじまりなのだという。
この指環は、願いを叶えるためのものではない。
願いと向き合うための“約束のしるし”。
Legend of The Moonshadow Mirror — That Which Reflects a Wish
Long ago,
in the village of Lipi in the Wish Province,
there was said to be a place called the “Cave of Mist.”
Only those who carried a wish in their hearts
could ever find their way
into its deep and veiled interior.
And in the furthest chamber—
where even moonlight rarely reached—
a single mirror rested in silence.
Its name was
The Moonshadow Mirror.
It revealed itself only in the stillness of night.
What it reflected was not one’s face,
but the very depths of one’s heart.
Dreams once let go.
Feelings never spoken aloud.
Prayers quietly forgotten with time.
Carried upon the trembling light of the moon,
the mirror was said to return them gently
to the one who gazed into it.
One evening,
an old storyteller of the village spoke these words:
“A wish is not something you cast into the sky.
To wish is to make a promise—
a promise to grasp it with your own hands.
What this mirror reflects
is the one who will fulfill the wish.
And that, surely—
is yourself.”
Since then,
on the night of the Oath Ritual,
the villagers would quietly walk toward the cave.
They would light three flames,
offer a cross-shaped ring,
and face the wish held within their chest.
And then, they would ask themselves
a single question:
“What is it that I truly wish for?”
Deep within the mist,
unnoticed by any eye,
the Moonshadow Mirror trembles softly.
The answer is not outside.
The gaze reflected within the mirror—
that is where
everything begins.
