顕還色

《顕還色のはじまり》

はるか昔、嵐の絶えない山があった。
人々はそこを 嵐の山 と呼び、近づこうとはしなかった。

だが、その山には
ひとりの魔女が住んでいたという。

彼女は嵐を恐れなかった。
むしろ雷の落ちる瞬間を、静かに見つめていた。

ある夜のこと。

稲妻が山肌を裂き、
ひとつの金属片に落ちた。

その瞬間、
金属は不思議な光を帯びたという。

それは塗られた色ではなかった。
光でも、炎でもない。

まるでそこに隠れていた何かが
姿を現したような色だった。

魔女はその現象を何度も確かめ、
やがてひとつの釜をつくった。

雷を導くための釜。
後に 雷釜 と呼ばれるものだ。

そして嵐の夜、
その釜の中で最初に現れた色は――

黄金だった。

それはただ美しいだけの色ではなかった。

触れた者のこころに、
言葉にならない想いを呼び起こす色だったという。

魔女はそれをこう呼んだ。

顕還色（けんかんしょく）

隠れていた願いが 顕れ、
やがて持ち主のこころへ 還る色。

やがてこの術は
顕還色の技として受け継がれ、
顕色師、そして魔法使いたちへと伝わっていった。

そして古い顕色師たちは
こんな言葉を残している。

顕還色は、やがて静かに薄れていく。

だがそれは、失われたのではない。

色が導いた願いが、
持ち主のこころへ還ったからだと言われている。

だから顕還色は
鎧を纏うためのものでも、
化粧を施すためのものでもない。

ただ、
こころに眠る願いを顕し、
その人のもとへ還してくれる彩りなのだという。

この古の技法こそが、

現代で『メッキ』と呼ばれているものの

源流に近いといわれている。

The Beginning of Kenkan Colors

Long ago, there was a mountain where storms never ceased.
People called it the Mountain of Storms,
and none dared approach it.

Yet it was said that
a single witch lived there.

She did not fear the storms.
Rather, she quietly watched
the moment when lightning struck.

One night—

A bolt of lightning split the mountainside
and struck a small piece of metal.

At that very instant,
the metal began to glow with a mysterious color.

It was not a color that had been painted on.
Nor was it light, nor flame.

It was as though something hidden within
had suddenly revealed itself.

The witch observed this phenomenon again and again,
and eventually she crafted a single vessel.

A cauldron made to guide lightning.

In later years,
it came to be known as the Thunder Cauldron.

And on a storm-filled night,
the very first color to appear within that cauldron was—

gold.

But it was not merely a beautiful color.

It was said that anyone who touched it
would feel unspoken emotions
stirring deep within their heart.

The witch gave this color a name.

Kenkan Color.

A color in which hidden wishes appear,
and eventually return
to the heart of their bearer.

In time, this art was passed down
as the Technique of Kenkan Colors,
and it spread among Chromancers
and later among mages.

And the ancient chromancers
left behind these words:

Kenkan Colors will one day
quietly fade away.

But that does not mean they are lost.

It is said that the wish the color revealed
has simply returned
to the heart of its bearer.

For that reason,
Kenkan Colors were never meant
to adorn armor
nor to decorate the face.

They exist only
to reveal the wishes sleeping within the heart
and guide them back
to the one who carries them.

And it is said that
this ancient technique

may be close to the very origin
of what the modern world
now calls “plating.”
